Plane Dreams, Joe Murphy
Become Part of a Community Passionate About Creative Railway Photography
Since its formation in 1971, the Phoenix Railway Photographic Circle has encouraged photographers to look beyond the conventional railway record shot and explore more imaginative ways of portraying the railway environment. More than fifty years later, that philosophy remains at the heart of everything we do.
Phoenix is much more than a photographic club. It is a friendly and supportive community of railway photographers who enjoy sharing ideas, developing their photography and learning from one another through constructive critique and collaboration.
If you enjoy photographing railways, are open to new ideas and are looking to develop your photography alongside like-minded enthusiasts, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
In the Frame Bracketed, Jim Knight
Is Phoenix Right for You?
We’re not simply looking for accomplished photographers.
We’re looking for photographers who:
enjoy creative and thoughtful railway photography;
are willing to explore new ideas and develop their own photographic style;
welcome constructive feedback and enjoy learning from others;
appreciate the value of sharing knowledge and experience; and
would like to become active members of a friendly photographic community.
Whether you’ve been photographing railways for decades or are still developing your own style, enthusiasm, creativity and a willingness to participate are every bit as important as technical ability.

Applying for Membership
Joining Phoenix begins with a simple application process designed to help us get to know you and your photography.
You’ll be invited to submit:
a completed Membership Application;
a portfolio of 12–15 railway photographs that represent your current work; and
a brief personal statement explaining your interest in Phoenix and what you hope to gain from membership.
Your application will then be considered by our dedicated Assessment Panel, comprising experienced members of the Circle.
The Panel reviews every application against a published assessment standard, considering both the photographic portfolio and the Membership Application. The process is intended to be fair, consistent and supportive, recognising not only photographic ability but also creativity, potential and the applicant’s enthusiasm for becoming an active member of Phoenix.

Our Philosophy
Phoenix has always believed that the best railway photographs are about far more than trains.
They capture atmosphere, tell stories, celebrate people and places, explore light and weather and reveal the railway as part of a wider landscape.
Above all, they reflect the photographer’s own vision and individuality.
If that approach resonates with you, Phoenix could be the ideal place to continue your photographic journey.
