How to use this Gallery |
Introduction
Welcome to the PRPC online Photo Galleries. There are two types of Gallery.
1. Critique. For uploading pictures for viewing, commenting and rating by other Critique Group Members. Only members of the Critique Group can upload pictures and make comments & submit ratings. Circle members who are not members of the Critique group can view pictures once they have a login to use the galleries but cannot add ratings or comments. Anyone who is not a registered member of the Galleries will be unable to view the Critique Gallery.
2. Display. Galleries for display of Members' pictures to anyone.
Members must be set up to use these galleries before they can upload any images or view the members-only galleries. The Gallery Administrator will create a logon for them when they join the Circle.
Critique Gallery
The Critique Gallery is made up of a number of individual Galleries per year where images are uploaded and other members rate the images and make comments. Phoenix Critique Galleries are different to other photo galleries such as Flickr because the comments and ratings are a core part of the experience for our members. With other galleries they are a minor extra which tends to be used less often.
The way the system operates is that members upload their pictures into a gallery in advance of its "Release Date". On the Release Date of the gallery the Administrator approves all the images and the contents of the gallery can be viewed and comments & ratings can be made. For example a gallery will be in place for release on 1st June. When pictures have been first loaded they can't be viewed. By having a Release Date members know that all the images in a gallery are fresh and, compared to the alternative of adding images one at a time, don't have to keep checking back for new images and making comments.
The rules are as follows:
A member of the Circle becomes a member of the Online Critique Gallery by requesting membership from the Critique Gallery Secretary and then registering in the Gallery.
Circle members who are not members of the Online Critique Gallery may view the contents of the Critique Gallery but will be unable to upload images or leave comments & ratings
Non-members of the Circle are only able to view the Display Galleries. The Online Critique Gallery are for Circle members only.
Membership of the Online Critique Gallery carries a responsibility to participate by submitting images and making comments and ratings on other members submissions although there is no obligation to comment on all images
The Online Critique Gallery rounds take place quarterly, with each round starting on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October.
Members can submit up to 2 entries in the Critique Gallery per round and any number in the Display Gallery.
An image in the Critique Gallery can be rated between one and five stars. The number of yellow phoenixes shows how the image's current member rating. To add your rating position your mouse pointer over the row of five miniature phoenix symbols so that the desired number (1 to 5) are shown in red. Click to add this as a rating. A rating can't be changed once added.
Display Gallery
The display galleries are open to anyone to view. A new gallery is created every month. Comments and ratings are not possible.
The way the system operates is that members upload their pictures into the gallery in advance of the "Release Date". For example a gallery will be in place for release on 1st May. When pictures have been first loaded they can't be viewed. On the Release date of the gallery the Administrator approves all the images and the contents of the gallery can be viewed
Gallery Slideshow
Both types of gallery have a slideshow feature. When a gallery is displayed, click on any of the small thumbnail images to display the details of a photo. Clicking on "Slide Show" in the light grey bar on the left side above the image starts the slide show. It is stopped by Clicking on the "Stop Slideshow" button in the light grey bar below the images. You can step through the images one-by-one forwards and backwards by clicking on the small red triangles near the top right of the screen.
Preparing and Uploading Images
Use the Upload Image option on the main menu to load an image into one of the galleries. A drop down box in the upload screen allows you to choose the gallery for the upload. Images uploaded to the galleries should be sized to a maximum of 1280 pixels wide and 1000 pixels high. Larger images will be rejected. This is because the gallery would otherwise automatically resize larger pictures and the resizing method built into the gallery delivers poor quality. It's best to size the image to the right dimensions in the first place. All images should be in JPEG format and contain an sRGB colour profile.
Technical Information
These galleries were created by Kim Fullbrook in 2011 using the Coppermine Photo Gallery package. Also used are HTML, the PHP scripting language and a MySQL database.
