No More Night Mail Crossing the Border . . . .
Royal Mail recently made the disappointing and somewhat controversial announcement that they were completely abandoning their mail by rail operation, after an association of almost 200 years. Cost was cited as one of the main issues, as the units were due for heavy overhaul. DB Cargo was originally contracted to run the trains until 10th October 2024, but in the event, Royal Mail brought the final date forward by three weeks. The last trains ran on the evening of Friday 20th September, without ceremony or fanfare - a sad end indeed. What now for the fleet of 15 class 325s, which are almost 30 years old? Here, a Daventry to Shieldmuir train streaks across the Six Arches viaduct at Scorton on 16th August 2024.
