Steam and silhouettes

Victorian Railways restored A2 Class 4-6-0 No. 986 charging up the 1 in 40 gradient out of Lilydale banked by K Class 2-8-0 No. 153. As the silhouetted figures show, I was not alone. Lilydale is at the outer end of an electrified Melbourne suburban line and its station is about to be replaced as part of a level crossing removal project. To commemorate this, Steamrail Victoria ran Lilydale-Ringwood (11kms) shuttles topped and tailed by the two locos and sandwiched between the 20 minute interval electric services. Part of the line, as here, is single track so the steam operations had to be slick. British enthusiasts may be surprised that the train comprised five wooden-bodied carriages (the maximum the platforms could cope with) and the track is unfenced so people could wander to and fro at will.
