The lack of public road transport is one of the principal reasons for the survival of the local train service from Sheffield throught the Hope Valley to New Mills. Ironically it carries most passengers at the weekend, primarily ramblers and hikers seeking a change from the grime of the Potteries, Lancashire and South Yorkshire. A two car dmu is depicted here near the top of the long ascent to Cowburn Tunnel, Edale making for New Mills.
